Greatest moments in poker history
Nos. 15-11

Here are numbers 15-11 of the greatest moments in poker history

15. SCOTTY NGUYEN – ‘YOU CALL AND IT’S ALL OVER, BABY!’ 1998

Poker’s charismatic showman, the WSOP main event and a memorable catchphrase all equal Scotty Nguyen’s greatest moment. Supping a beer and jangling his jewellery, the board read 8-9-9-8-8 – a full house. After moving all-in, Scotty stood up and uttered the immortal line, ‘You call now and it’s all over, baby!’ His hapless opponent, Kevin McBride, made the call and Scotty showed J-9 for the better full house. A new World Champion – and a new poker icon – was born, baby!

14. JOHNNY CHAN BACK-TO-BACK MAIN EVENTS 1987 & 1988

It will probably never happen again in the WSOP. Chan won back-to-back main events in 1987 and 1988, adding his name to those of Moss, Brunson and Ungar and becoming a poker legend in the process. In an epic heads-up war with Erik Seidel in 1988, the ‘Orient Express’ slow-played his way into the record books in one of the most famous hands in poker history. Chan set the trap by checking the nuts down to the river. Seidel fell for the bait and pushed all-in. Chan called and history was made. Poker magic!

13. JACK STRAUS - ‘CHIP AND A CHAIR’ 1982

It’s the comeback story that has been used to inspire countless down-on-their-luck poker players over the years. At the 1982 WSOP main event, Jack ‘Treetop’ Straus stood up to leave the table after he had pushed all-in and lost. But as he was about to walk away, he noticed he had a $500 chip remaining, and because he had not verbally declared that he was all-in, Straus was able to continue in the tournament.

The rest, as they say, is history and after an unlikely series of double-ups, Straus was on his way to being crowned the main event champion. Sadly, Straus passed away in 1988, but his good fortune in poker’s biggest tournament has no doubt helped coin perhaps the most famous saying in the game. It just goes to show you should never give up!

12. PARTY POKER MILLION 2002

The Party Poker Million was a landmark tournament. It was the first tournament to combine regular buy-ins and online qualifiers. And, it was the first major tournament to advertise its satellite freerolls on TV. The result was an explosion of new players trying their hand at satellites – and the seeds of the poker boom were sown in the US. A truly groundbreaking event in poker’s history.

11. JOHNNY MOSS VS NICK ‘THE GREEK’ 1951

Despite taking place over half a century ago, the marathon heads-up session between Johnny Moss and Nick ‘the Greek’ Dandalos still captures the imagination today. Maybe it’s something to do with the fact it took five months to find a winner in Moss; or maybe it’s that Dandalos lost over $30 million in today’s money. Or, perhaps it’s just the classic quote Dandalos uttered in defeat: ‘Mr Moss, I have to let you go.’
