If you want to win you need to know when you’re beat… Making good lay-downs is vital to playing winning poker and developing an instinct for when you’re beaten is extremely important, but this will take time.

One thing to focus on is that making profit at lower stakes no-limit cash games is not about making superb calls with marginal hands – you’ll make plenty from your strong hands.

Therefore, you don’t need to make big calls with marginal hands like top pair and can often lay them down. Know your players and know the opponents that will make moves on you.

Remember the golden rules – use pot odds to assess how likely your hand is to be good and don’t play big pots without a big hand.
